چکیده

The spike timing reliability of a neuron can be assessed via measuring the similarity of spike trains obtained in trials with repeated presentations of the same stimulus. Using a correlation-based measure of spike timing reliability we show that spurious correlations between independent Poisson spike trains can lead to a systematic misinterpretation to an extent that scales with the neural spike rate. Therefore, comparison may, for instance, guide the choice of stimulus selective sensory neurons that are pooled for optimal stimulus reconstruction. We propose straightforward methods to abstract from these spurious correlations and demonstrate effects in an application to recorded spike trains of a retinal ganglion cell population. & 2011 Elsevier B.V. A new correlation-based measure of spike timing reliability

We introduce a new correlation-based measure of spike timing reliability. Unlike other measures, it does not require the definition of a posteriori "events". It relies on only one parameter, which relates to the timescale of spike timing precision. We test the measure on surrogate data sets with varying amounts of spike time jitter, and missing or additional spikes, and compare it with a widely...

Influence of ionic conductances on spike timing reliability of cortical neurons for suprathreshold rhythmic inputs.

Spike timing reliability of neuronal responses depends on the frequency content of the input. We investigate how intrinsic properties of cortical neurons affect spike timing reliability in response to rhythmic inputs of suprathreshold mean. Analyzing reliability of conductance-based cortical model neurons on the basis of a correlation measure, we show two aspects of how ionic conductances influ...

Lack of spike-count and spike-time correlations in the substantia nigra reticulata despite overlap of neural responses.

Previous studies of single neurons in the substantia nigra reticulata (SNr) have shown that many of them respond to similar events. These results, as well as anatomical studies, suggest that SNr neurons share inputs and thus may have correlated activity. Different types of correlation can exist between pairs of neurons. These are traditionally classified as either spike-count ("signal" and "noi...

Training and Spontaneous Reinforcement of Neuronal Assemblies by Spike Timing Plasticity.

The synaptic connectivity of cortex is plastic, with experience shaping the ongoing interactions between neurons. Theoretical studies of spike timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) have focused on either just pairs of neurons or large-scale simulations. A simple analytic account for how fast spike time correlations affect both microscopic and macroscopic network structure is lacking. We develop a ...

Spurious Correlations in Mathematical Thinking

How does detection of correlational structure affect mathematical thinking and learning? When does correlational information lead to erroneous problem solving? Are experienced students susceptible to misleading correlations? This work attempts to answer these questions by examining a source of systematic errors termed the spurious-correlation effect. This effect is hypothesized to occur when a ...
